Iowa Offers Washpun

Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery didn't wait long to offer a scholarship to a point guard to replace the transferring Cully Payne. Less than 24 hours after Payne's announced departure, McCaffery extended an opportunity to Cedar Rapids Washington Guard Wes Washpun.

Wes Washpun received a scholarship offer from his childhood favorite on Tuesday night. Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery called and shared the good news with the Class of 2011 point guard from Cedar Rapids Washington High.

"He just told me they were offering and that with Cully (Payne) leaving that they need a point guard," Washpun said. "Of course, it means a lot to me. I've been a fan all of my life and it's nice to know that the people at Iowa believe in my ability as well as other schools around the country."

Washington backcourt mate Josh Oglesby signed with Iowa in November. Payne, a sophomore, announced he'd be leaving the Hawkeye program on Tuesday.

"I'm still keeping my options open," Washpun said. "Of course the Iowa offer means a lot, but I'm going to keep my options open with Tennessee and Missouri State. I'm going to discuss things with my family and coaches and we'll go from there."

Missouri State has offered a scholarship to Washpun. Tennessee has told him one could be coming soon.

Washpun said he plans to make his college choice early next week and at least by the time the late signing period tips off on Wednesday.
