Iowa Leads for Thomas

Iowa is hoping to land at least a few wide receivers in the Class of 2012. Gerald Thomas fits the mold, holds a Hawkeye offer and has them at the top of his list right now.

Iowa leads in the race for 2012 Texas Wide Receiver Gerald Thomas but the deal hasn't been sealed.

"They're the top school on my list," Thomas said. "I'll be there for a one-day camp on June 18. I should know a lot more after that."

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound speedster will camp at Texas Christian this month as well as with the third team in his Top 3, Arizona. He has offers from Iowa and Arizona.

"TCU has told me that they'll offer at camp if I show them what I need to show them," Thomas said. "I'm trying to set something up with Arizona today."

After Thomas sees the three schools, or maybe just two of them, he could pull the trigger on a decision this summer.

"I really feel like I can play with anybody in NCAA football," Thomas said. "If Iowa and TCU tell me I have a chance to play early, I might verbal this summer. Those are my Top 2, so if I find what I want at one of them, it could be over."

Thomas said that Iowa Wide Receivers Coach Erik Campbell watched him work out during spring ball in Texas last month.

"I guess he went back to talk to some of the other (Iowa) coaches and they offered a few days later," Thomas said. "I talked with him on the phone and he said I have a chance to play early as a slot guy. They have a lot of bigger receivers, but they need someone in the slot."

Campbell also told Thomas he could be utilized in the return game.

"I feel like speed is a big part of my game," he said. "I feel like I can get in and out of breaks fast and have a good vertical for my height."

Thomas said he hasn't been timed in the 40 recently, but ran the open 400 meters and the 4x400 in track this spring. He claimed the 6th best time in the state in the open at 48.8 seconds.
