Walk-on Chance

Iowa appears to be done with adding scholarship QBs in the '12 class, but the Hawkeyes have opened the door for a preferred walk-on.

It appears that Iowa is finished adding to its quarterback collection through scholarship in the Class of 2012. The Hawkeyes seem to be pushing for a preferred walk-on, however.

Breck School Quarterback Austin Lommen was in the mix for a full-ride at Iowa until the program signed JUCO QB Cody Sokol. Now, the Hawkeyes have asked Lommen to walk on.

"Coach (Eric) Johnson said that they would take me in a second at as walk-on," the 6-foot-4, 190-pounder from Minneapolis said. "He said that it's on the table and it's something I'm considering. It's not he same as a scholarship, obviously, but it's a good opportunity."

Lommen said he's also been offered walk-on chances at Stanford, Boston College and Vanderbilt. He's also looking at Harvard, which as an Ivy League school does not offer scholarships.

"The Harvard education is why they're still on the list," Lommen said. "I'm just deciding if I want to take a shot as a walk-on at an FBS school or not."

Lommen isn't concerned with making a quick decision. He's not bound by the Feb. 1 national signing day and will take a few months to pick his spot.

"All of the schools are pretty much in the same boat," he said. "Now that there's no scholarship opportunity available, they're all on the same plane. I'm going to make some visits and see how the walk-on opportunities would play out."

Hayden Northern said last week that he also was offered a walk-on opportunity with Iowa. The '12 Indiana QB was scheduled to visit Western Illinois this coming Friday.
