MSU Leading for Horne

'12 Milwaukee Bradley Tech Running Back Marcus Horne is visiting Illinois this weekend and will be at Michigan State the following week.

It often pays to know people in high places. Marcus Horne is hoping that's the case with him.

The Class of 2012 running back from Milwaukee is friends with Michigan State great Andre Rison. He's looking to parlay that relationship into a spot on the Spartans.

"He's really helped me out," Horne said. "I like Michigan State a lot. They're offering a grey shirt right now and that's looking like the best thing out there for me.

"I really like Coach (Mark) Dantonio and Coach (Brad) Salem. They're really good guys. They also produce some great running backs."

Horne (5-foot-10, 175 pounds) is scheduled to visit Illinois this weekend and Michigan State the next week. He holds offers from MAC schools like Northern Illinois and Ohio, but said he'd likely go in a different direction if things don't work out with the BCS schools.

"I think I'd go to Northern Iowa before the MAC schools," the Bradley Tech senior said. "I really like that program. They play at a high level."

Iowa was showing some interest in Horne, but that pursuit seems to have faded.

"I don't know what happened with Iowa," Horne said. "They just stopped calling. I like them a lot, too, and figured they might be interested with (Mika'il) McCall and (Marcus) Coker leaving. I was high on them. I'm not sure what happened."

It now appears that Michigan State holds the lead for Horne's services.

"They really didn't have a lot of scholarships open," Horne said. "They said there's a grey short for me and possibly a chance to come in on scholarship next fall. But I think they have 12 or 13 commitments and only 16 or so available.

"I'm looking forward to getting out there on a visit, though."
