Ekpe Likes Iowa

Hendrick Ekpe is pacing himself in the recruiting process. The '13 DE holds offers from two Big Ten schools and has interest from others. The Texas product updates his recruitment in this Hawkeye Insider story.

Despite being located in the heart of Big 12 country, '13 Texas defensive end Hendrick Ekpe is doing his best to learn about the Big Ten. His two scholarship offers are from Iowa and Minnesota.

"We're not exposed to the Big Ten that much in Texas, but I know about those schools," Ekpe said. "I've gotten to know them through the letters and what I've looked up."

Ekpe reports that Texas Tech, SMU, Oklahoma State and Mississippi State also are showing interest in him.

"I haven't taken any visits this spring," he said. "I'm hoping to get to Iowa and Minnesota this summer."

The 6-foot-4, 212-pound Ekpe hails from Lewisville (TX) High. Scout.com ranks him as a three-star recruit on its five-star scale and the 71st-best DE in the country for '13.

"They like that I'm versatile," Ekpe said of what colleges have told him. "They like my speed off of the edge. They like my combination of quickness and power."

LeVar Woods and Erik Campbell are leading Iowa's recruitment of Ekpe.

"I get to talk to them on the phone and on Facebook, too," he said. "I get a lot of letters from Iowa and I think it's a great place to go, not only for football but for academics, too."

Academics are a main factor for Ekpe in deciding on a college he said. He is unsure of a major.

"I'm looking for a good education," he said. "I also want good coaches, which all of the schools have. Both schools who have offered me have great coaches. Their education programs are even better."

Ekpe said he's looking to make a decision after his high school season.
