Coach Talks Shimonek

Mildred High Coach Patrick Harvell has leaned on his quarterback since starting him as a freshman. He discusses signal caller, Nic Shimonek, who committed to Iowa on Thursday.

Honesty has been said to be the best policy. It seemed to have worked well for Iowa in the recruitment of quarterback Nic Shimonek.

"Coach (Greg) Davis shot us straight the whole way," said Shimonek's coach at Mildred High (Corsicana, TX) ), Patrick Harvell. "He was 100 percent honest and I think he and Nic had a natural bond."

The Hawkeyes extended a scholarship offer to 6-foot-4, 188-pound Shimonek on Thursday morning. The Class of 2013 prospect accepted it in the early afternoon.

"He's a kid with a big moral compass," Harvell said. "He's got great character and you can count on him to do the right thing in the classroom, on the field, off the field and in life."

Harvell said that Shimonek threw for 37 touchdowns and three interceptions as as a junior.

"He's a pocket passer with a strong, accurate arm," Harvell said. "He really is a good leader. He's been our starting quarterback since he was a freshman..

"We're a small Texas school (2A). We have a multi-sport athletes. He's also our best basketball and baseball player."

Shimonek held a scholarship offer from Lamar and was receiving interest from Oklahoma State. Despite leading Mildred to the state semifinals last season, he had flown under the recruiting radar.

"We've been a school that makes the playoffs and loses in the first and second round," Harvell said. "We were a game away from the House that Jerry (Jones) Built (Texas Stadium) last fall. I think people started to take notice of him then."

Harvell believes Shimonek has plenty of room to grow as a quarterback.

"He loves basketball and baseball, but that doesn't allow him to concentrate on football like a lot of other guys at 4A and 5A schools," Harvell said. "I think he's going to be excellent in college once he gets with Coach Davis and just concentrates on football. I think the sky is the limit."
