New Depth Chart

Iowa released its first post-camp two deep on Friday. Take a look at what changed and if there were any surprises.

Iowa CITY, Iowa - Iowa football Coach Kirk Ferentz released his first post-training camp depth chart on Friday afternoon. While there was movement since the early-August two-deeps, the change wasn't drastic and there weren't any shockers.

The ever-popular running back position is led by sophomore Damon Bullock as expected. The No. 2 spot is shared by true freshmen Greg Garmon and Michael Malloy.

Don Shumpert's absence at wide receiver is a big surprising as he was the No. 3 at Kids Day earlier this month. The wideout backups are Steve Staggs and Jacob Hillyer.

Jake Rudock emerged as the No. 2 quarterback behind James Vandenberg. The Iowa coaches wanted to red shirt incoming JUCO transfer Cody Sokol when he signed with the school.

The Hawkeye staff wanted to follow that Sokol plan with Eric Simmons, but the Iowa Western product is listed as the backup left guard.

Perhaps the biggest surprise on the depth chart is transfer Mark Weisman being listed ahead of last year's starter Brad Rogers at fullback. Rogers has been slowed by injuries this month but Weisman looked very solid in the two open practices.

Ray Hamilton bumps senior Zach Derby off of the second line at tight end. We didn't see much from the sophomore from Ohio in the public workouts.

It looks like a three-man, defensive end rotation coming into the season. Seniors Steve Bigach and Joe Gaglione and Dom Alvis, a junior, all are listed as starters. Melvin Spears is the lone backup on each side.

Carl Davis and Louis Trinca-Pasat emerged from the crowded defensive tackle competition to earn spots at No. 1. Marcus Collins bumped Cole Fisher as the second-team WLB and walk-on Macon Plewa (Franklin, Wisc) shares the backup MLB position with Quinton Alston, who also has been slowed by injury in camp.

The battle for the strong safety position hasn't been settled according to the two-deep. Senior Tom Donatell and sophomore Nico Law are listed as co-No. 1s.

True freshman Kevin Buford, who verbally committed to Toledo before switching up to the Hawkeyes, left camp as the backup right corner. His classmate, Connor Kornbrath, won the punting competition.
