Rob Blog: Open Period

The Iowa basketball coaches continue their search for recruits to help build the program. Find out where the staff has been this week and which visitors it will play host to this weekend in the Rob Blog.

Iowa CITY, Iowa - The Iowa basketball coaches hit the road Sunday as another open period started on the recruiting trail. Head man Fran McCaffery and staff should have little trouble racking up frequent flier miles.

The Hawkeyes played host to official visitor E.C. Matthews last weekend. When the Class of 2013 combo guard returned home to Michigan on Sunday, McCaffery and assistant coach Andrew Francis dropped in on him. According to a tweet by Romulus Assistant Nate Schmidt, Iowa was present Tuesday for an open gym.

The Hawkeyes continue this push with '14 forward Michael Finke. The Champaign (IL) prospect with a Hawkeye offer plans an unofficial visit to the school on Saturday. A day later, he'll play host members of the program's staff at an open gym, he said.

Malek Harris, a '14 forward from Sandburg High in Orland Park (IL), also expects to be in Iowa City this weekend. He said the Hawkeye coaches told him that they planned to come to his open gym in the near future.

Sacar Anim, a '15 forward from Minneapolis, also scheduled a visit to Iowa for this weekend but had to postpone the trip. He said he would be in Iowa City on Sept. 29 when the Hawkeyes face his home-state Golden Gophers in football.

Francis tweeted on Tuesday that he was in Denver. Another recruiting network later tweeted that the Hawkeyes were in to see 2014 East High recruits Dominique Collier and Ronnie Harrell.

Collier, a 6-1 PG, reports offers from Arizona, Colorado and Iowa. A 6-6 wing, Harrell reportedly has an offer from Wyoming.

NY2LASports tweeted Thursday morning that 2015 point guard Jalen Brunson would be visiting Iowa on Saturday. The 5-foot-10, 160-pounder runs with the Stevenson School (Des Plaines, IL) and Team NLP in AAU.

Southwestern Illinois Jets AAU Coach Dana Morgan told me this week that his 2014 wing Peyton Allen is looking to visit Iowa on Sept, 29. He has a Hawkeye offer.

Please stick with the Rob Blog as we continue to track the Hawkeye staff through this open period and beyond.
