"It definitely surprised me," he said. "You go in there hoping but I didn't have a clue that it was actually going to happen."
The Hawkeyes became the first school to extend an opportunity for LeGrand, a 6-foot-5, 260-pound offensive line prospect from Dubuque (Iowa) Senior High.
"Me and my family went down for the visit," he said. "Towards the end of it, we sat down in (head coach Kirk Ferentz's) office and talked for a good 30-45 minutes. He said that he would like for me to be a Hawkeye and to play for him and he would like to offer me a scholarship to go there."
LeGrand is scheduled to visit Iowa State on Tuesday. He isn't quite sure where he stands with the Cyclones in terms of a scholarship offer.
"There's a chance but, once again, it's kind of like when I went into Iowa. I have no clue what's going to happen. We're just going for a visit but it could happen," he said.
LeGrand said he is very thankful for the Iowa offer.
"It's a great opportunity," he said. "It doesn't change everything but it changes some things. It makes it so I'm probably not going to visit some of the smaller schools I was looking at. It's still kind of sinking in. I can't believe how great of an offer it is and what a chance it is."
Even with the Hawkeye opportunity, the process remains open for LeGrand.
"Me and my parents have been talking," he said. "It could be a week to a year (before he commits). We don't even know yet. We think we want to look around more but we have no clue. "
Although no visits have been set up, Legrand is considering trips to Northwestern and Kansas State this spring. He appreciates Iowa' encouraging him to check into other programs before picking a school.
"The main thing that (Offensive Line) Coach Brian Ferentz said was to make sure you look around; don't go to the first school that you like," LeGrand said. "He said he doesn't want to pressure me into anything. He said that they will keep in touch and keep recruiting me until I decide."
