Indianola Offensive Lineman Keegan Render confirmed to Hawkeye Insider via text message on Saturday morning that he had verbally committed to the University of Iowa football program. He became the eighth known pledge in the 2014 Class and the second in two days. New Jersey linebacker Jameer Outsey pulled the trigger on Friday.
Render chose the Hawkeyes ahead of an offer from Iowa State and interest from Northern Illinois, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, among others. Iowa offered the 6-foot-4, 315-pounder a scholarship in June of last year.
Scout.com ranks Render as the 36th-best guard nationally in the 2014 Class. The service pegs him as a three-star recruit on its five-star scale.
The Hawkeyes also have received verbals from in-state prospects Ross Pierschbacher (Cedar Falls), Lucas LeGrand (Dubuque Senior) and Jay Scheel (Union). Urbandale Wide Receiver Allen Lazard chose Iowa State. The other prospect ranked in the Top 6, Cedar Rapids Xavier's Matt Nelson, has trimmed his list of prospective schools to Iowa, Notre Dame and Stanford and his expected to announce his decision in the next few weeks.
Iowa is playing host to its second annual prospect barbeque this weekend. Commitments, key targets and their families come to campus to bond.
Missouri offensive lineman Brian Wallace, Maryland defensive tackle Jemal Averette, Texas running back Treyvon Hughes and New Jersey tight end Ryan Izzo are a few of the top prospects visiting Iowa this weekend.
Render toured Iowa on Friday. Saturday, he played in a basketball tournament with his high school team, he told me via text message.
The basketball tournament is expected to be an all-day affair. I will try to catch up with Render after it to get his reaction to becoming a Hawkeye.
