Matt Nelson is reflecting as he prepares to make the biggest decision of his young life. He's going to take some time to make sure what he is sensing is clearly meets his desire.
"I have a feeling of what I want and who I will choose," Nelson said. "I've been to all the places and became comfortable being at the universities and meeting all the coaching staffs, which I have also became comfortable with. So, I have a feeling who I will pick."
The Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Xavier standout said he will verbally commit to Iowa, Notre Dame or Stanford "within the next few weeks." The Hawkeyes and Irish see him as a defensive end while the Cardinal would bring him in as an outside linebacker.
The 6-foot-8, 240-pound Nelson camped with Stanford this week, his first trip to Palo Alto. He visited Notre Dame twice and has been to Iowa on several occasions.
"The academics easily were the most impressive thing about Stanford," Nelson said. "They have so many resources and the professors are the best in the world."
Nelson, who plans to become an orthopedic surgeon, enjoyed working in the Cardinal defense.
"They had me playing outside linebacker right now and I had a blast doing that in camp," he said.
One of the things Nelson thought about on his trip to Stanford was its distance from Iowa.
"I don't mind travel so it really doesn't affect me but I like when my parents come to my games and it would be hard for them to come," he said. "For friends and other family members it would be difficult as well. I'm not putting a whole lot but on that but it has some weight."
Nelson said he may visit Iowa one more time before announcing his decision.
"I'll try but it doesn't matter too much," he said. "I've been there a few times and have seen what I need to see."
