IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Rob Report is back for season 11 of Iowa Hawkeyes football. Today we look at the season-opener against Northern Illinois.
INJURY REPORT Reese Fleming and Michael Malloy didn't dress for Iowa on Saturday. Both battled injuries in camp.
Brandon Scherff, who missed much of last season following knee surgery, fell to the turf in the second half and remained on the ground for several minutes. It ended up being cramps and he did return to action.
Starting cornerbacks B.J. Lowery and Jordan Lomax suffered second-half injuries and did not return. Lomax said he injured his hamstring but would be able to play next week. Lowery's health was not addressed in the postgame press conference.
-Iowa turned to speed on the edge when faced with third and long situations on Saturday. Nate Meier and Quinton Alston lined up at defensive end on many of those plays.
-Desmond King was the only true freshman to see action for the Hawkeyes. He played on special teams in the first half and then replaced the injured Lomax at cornerback in the second half. Running Back LeShun Daniels, who Coach Kirk Ferentz would play, did not.
-The Iowa running backs showed their versatility early and often Saturday. Damon Bullock lined up wide on the game's second play and throughout the contest. Mark Weisman played tailback and fullback ahead of Bullock.
-Announced attendance for Saturday's game was 67,402.
-Much-talked-about junior college transfer Damond Powell got in for three plays on Saturday. The speedy receiver hauled in a 49-yard bomb on his first rep. He was targeted on another long pass that fell incomplete.
-Kevonte Martin-Manley caught a career-best nine passes that went for 79 yards.
-Christian Kirksey recorded a team-high 14 tackles, one of which forced a fumble that he recovered and returned 52 yards for a touchdown. The senior linebacker celebrated 21st birthday.
-James Morris and Dominic Alvis each notched two tackes for loss.
-Wesiman finished with 100 rushing yards on 20 carries. Bullock totaled 76 on 17. Weisman's first-half fumble did turn into three points for NIU.
-Iowa employed a diamond formation on kickoffs with only one deep man - Jordan Cotton. The senior accumulated 48 yards on three kick returns.
-The Hawkeye tight ends caught two passes on Saturday, both by C.J. Fiedorowicz, who had an 11-yard TD grab.
-Iowa lost its first season-opener in 13 years.
