Iowa came into Marquise Doherty's life years ago. His older sister attended the school.

The Big Ten university recently decided it would like him to follow in her footsteps. He received a scholarship offer from the Hawkeyes last week.

"I like Iowa," the Class of 2015 safety from Winnetonka High in Kanas City said. "I have some ties. But you always like your most recent offer."

In addition to having a sibling as an alum, Doherty's good friend and prep teammate, Aaron Mends, is verbally committed to Iowa in its '14 class.

"He's always talking to me about joining him up there, even before the offer," Doherty said. "But it's all friendly, nothing extreme."

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Doherty also reports scholarship offers from Illinois, Missouri and Nebraska. He said he has no favorite.

"I'm still getting a feel for all of them," he said.

LeVar Woods recruits the Kansas City area for the Hawkeyes.

"I think he's a good guy all the way around," Doherty said. "He was honest with me and always kept in contact."

The Kansas City Star tabbed Doherty as a second-team all-metro pick as a defensive back this season. Woods hasn't told him where he fits into the Iowa defense.

"We haven't discussed that too much," Doherty said.

Doherty is considering college majors in advertising/personal relations or broadcasting. He won't be committing anytime soon.

"I plan on making my decision sometime senior year," Doherty said. "I'm gonna let everything play out and not rush anything."
