After all the worrying about when Iowa is going to gain its first commitment, HawkTalkOnline.com has now learned the first commitment is likely before the Kent State game. Multi-sport athlete Calvin Davis appears to be the one, now its just a matter of time.
"I'm close to making a decision, but its not definite at this moment," claimed Davis. "I'm 80% sure I'll play football, and if that is the case, I'll definitely be headed to Iowa. I have a couple other schools recruiting me in football, but I'm the most happy with Iowa. I'll make a decision within a few weeks, possibly in a week or two."
"I'm so happy with Iowa because I feel so good when I'm watching them. I've been to a few of their practices and its quite the feeling. Seeing the stadium makes me just imagine playing for all those fans. I love Kinnick Stadium. I, also, like the idea that I'll be able to run track, too. I'll be with like the same teammates since so many football players run track at Iowa, as it is."
Track is important to Calvin. His City High sprint medley relay team won at the National High School Track Meet. Calvin's 400 split was in the low 47's. That same speed is what we will be very useful in Coach O'Keefe's spread offense.
Calvin would be a great first catch. He is the type of athlete and playmaker that Coach Ferentz has done a great job of bringing into Iowa so far, along with the likes of Fred Russell, CJ Jones, Ed Hinkel, Jermelle Lewis, Adolphus Shelton, and etc.
Sidenote: I have heard and I am aware of the rumors of other verbal commitments. I can tell you that there are no in-state commitments at this time. I'm still trying to verify a possible commitment from an out of state prospect, but so far, I haven't been able to do so.
