Iowa Offers Cooksey

Iowa continued its movement in the Atlanta area Tuesday night by offering a scholarship to linebacker Tyler Cooksey. He talked with us about the Big Ten opportunity.

LeVar Woods stopped by Tyler Cooksey's school around Thanksgiving. They got to know each other. Tuesday night, the Iowa linebackers coach offered a scholarship to the Atlanta area prospect.

"I think it's an honor to be offered by a guy like Coach Woods," Cooksey said.

Hawkeye Insider wrote a story on Cooksey last month. You can read that here.

Cooksey has seen his recruitment pick up as of late. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound inside linebacker reported scholarship offers from Boston College, Georgia Tech, Northwestern, and NC State as of Feb. 20. Since then, Iowa, North Carolina, Tennessee and Central Florida have come forward with opportunities.

The Hawkeyes, who increased their attention in the Atlanta area in the 2014 recruiting cycle, might face an uphill battle with Cooksey. The Greater Atlanta Christian School standout says he's not sure if he'll visit Iowa City or is willing to play that far away from home.

"It depends on what my parents say," Cooksey said about a trip to Iowa. "i do want to be close enough for my friends and family to come watch me play (in college). It just depends though."

Woods did what he could to make Cooksey feel wanted.

"He said that he is very particular with the guys he offers at linebacker and he wants to make sure I was his type of guy," Cooksey said. "He said I'm a fast and physical guy and that he loves the way I play."

We'll see, now, if Cooksey considers Iowa with many good options closer to home.
