Two-Deeps See Movement

Iowa released its latest depth-chart on Friday and it saw movement since the pre-camp edition. Bo Bower, Greg Mabin, Josey Jewell, Nate Meier, Mick Ellis and Damon Bullock jumped up to the first-team.

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa entered training camp this month hoping to settle competition at several key positions. According to the latest depth chart released on Friday, more things might be up in the air than settled.

The Hawkeyes began the month with noted battles at cornerback, punter and kicker. With the opener against UNI a week from Saturday, a number of positions still are being contested based on the newest two-deep.

Junior Travis Perry sat atop the depth chart at the LEO linebacker spot vacated by current Cleveland Brown Christian Kirksey since the beginning of the spring. Josey Jewell created buzz at that spot in April but when the new two-deep was distributed on Friday, redshirt freshman walk-on Bo Bower joined Perry as co-first-team.

Bower played very well in Saturday's Kids Day open scrimmage at Kinnick Stadium. The West Branch product showed the versatility needed at the spot, being able to play the run and also cover tight ends.

Jewell has moved to a co-starter at WLB with Reggie Spearman, who held down the No. 1 place on the depth chart throughout he offseason. Quinton Alston was alone at middle linebacker with Perry and Gilson named his co-backups.

Another unlikely starter may have emerged at left corner. Redshirt sophomore Greg Mabin moved from wide receiver to defense last spring. Friday, he was listed at the top of the depth chart ahead of the competition, Sean Draper and Maurice Fleming, who shared the No. 1 position since the end of 2013. Fleming was posted as Mabin's backup with Draper No. 2 behind Desmond King at right corner.

Nate Meier moved up at defensive end. The true junior now was a co-starter with senior Mike Hardy, who opened six games in '13. Darian Cooper, whose injury kept him out of Kids Day, was absent from the two-deep at defensive tackle.

As expected, Macon Plewa moved up to the No. 1 at fullback with starter Adam Cox going down with a season-ending knee injury last week. No backup was listed.

True freshman kicker Mick Ellis moved from off of the two-deep to join Marshall Koehn, a junior, as a co-No. 1. Alden Haffar had occupied the No. 2 spot through the spring before transferring this summer.

The staff also wasn't prepared to publicly announce the starting punter Friday. Connor Kornbrath, who held the job the last two seasons, continued to share the top line with junior college transfer Dillon Kidd. They're also listed as co-first-team holders.

Much less movement occurred on offense. Henry Krieger Coble moved up to No 2 tight end behind Ray Hamilton. The previously listed back-up, Jake Duzey, was injured and missed Kids Day.

Damond Powell, who underwent hernia surgery in his groin this summer, was listed as a back-up receiver. Coach Kirk Ferentz said in July that he felt the senior would be out for training camp.

There also some shuffling at running back, where Mark Weisman and Jordan Canzeri had been listed as the co-starters this summer. Friday, Weisman and Damon Bullock shared the top line with Canzeri as their backup. LeShun Daniels fell off the chart.

EXTRA-POINTS: The Hawkeyes list 12 starting positions on offense and 55 players overall on their two-deep, including punter and kicker, but not returners…Of the 23 starters listed, 11 are seniors. That includes Perry and Hardy, who were named co-starters…Four freshmen were listed as starters on the depth chart, including co-starters Ellis, Bower and Jewell. Sean Welsh (left guard) is the only freshman listed alone as a starter.
