Slater Makes Call for Hawkeyes

Iowa picked up its 15th verbal commitment Thursday when St. Louis defensive end Michael Slater pledged to the school. The senior spoke with Hawkeye Insider about his choice.

Michael Slater had planned a post-season commitment. That timetable recently changed.

The St. Louis area defensive end confirmed Thursday evening that he verbally committed to Iowa. He became the 15th known pledge in the Hawkeyes 2015 recruiting class.

"Something in my gut told me it was time," the 6-foot-3, 245-pounder from Parkway Central High (Chesterfield, MO) said. "I talked to all of my coaches, family and friends about it. I've loved Iowa since I first met Coach (Chris) Polizzi and Coach (Jim) Reid. I just felt it was the place I wanted to be."

Slater unofficially visited Iowa in July.

"I love the environment up there," he said. "All of the coaches, I mean every single one of them, are amazing. And, it's not too far away from home."

Slater also reports scholarship offers from Arkansas State, Austin Peay, Ball State, Buffalo and Illinois State. Scout.com ranks him as the No. 138 D-end in the '15 Class and a three-star prospect on a five-star scale.

"I mean, I can't get too caught up in the moment right now because I still have a team I need to take to state at the end of next month," he said. "But it's an amazing feeling. I'm definitely ready for the next chapter."

Slater is looking to major in sports management when he arrives at Iowa.
