Dennis Hynek wrestled for Dan Gable at Iowa. Now the coach at Cedar Rapids Kennedy, the Hawkeyes have been scouting one of his top athletes.
The connection comes from Hynek's friendship with Iowa football assistant Reese Morgan.
"(Hynek) set up a call with (Morgan)," Beyer said. "I talked to him for a while over the phone and he invited me to their junior day."
The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Beyer accepted the invitation to Iowa's latest junior day this past Saturday.
"I was very impressed by everything. The coaches were very nice and respectful and I enjoyed talking with them. Their new 55 million dollar facility is top of the line. Their weight room and nutrition station is amazing. I can see how it all benefits the athletes.
"I talked with Coach Morgan the most. He said he isn't sure what position I would play, whether it would be on offense or defense, but he said he knows I'm a football player. He said they would have a spot for me there."
Beyer projects as a tight end on offense and a linebacker or safety on defense.
"I am not sure about (an Iowa) scholarship offer at this point in the recruiting process but it is possible in the future," he said. "They do want me to come to camp this summer."
Beyer, who plans to major in Biology, has an Iowa State visit behind him and will see Northern Iowa soon. He said he's also being recruited by Northern Illinois, North Dakota State, Northwest Missouri State, Western Illinois and Minnesota-Duluth.
"I am setting up another visit to Iowa State and they have said I am a potential scholarship athlete," he said. "UNI invited me to their junior day."
