NO. 5 - CENTER AUSTIN BLYTHE
It's been a makeshift offensive line for Iowa for nearly all of conference player. It takes a senior like Blythe to hold it altogether and he deserves a lot of credit for that. He's also incredibly athletic for an offensive lineman and his pulling ability has been one of the anchors to the running game.
NO. 4 - WIDE RECEIVER MATT VANDEBERG
If a wide receiver was going to make this list, most would have said before the season began that it would have had to be Tevaun Smith. Smith has been effective this year but also has missed time with an injury. VandeBerg has just been reliable every week. He leads the team in receptions and has been amazingly clutch on third downs. His emergence has also allowed other wideouts such as Jerminic Smith to take advantage of opportunities as well.
NO. 3 - OFFENSIVE GUARD JORDAN WALSH
Blythe has been great on the offensive line but Iowa's best lineman has been Jordan Walsh. Everyone saw how important he was when he missed most of the action of the second quarter against Illinois. The Hawkeyes love to run behind him and he's been one of the best in the nation on the interior this year. Walsh is someone that should play on Sundays.
NO. 2 - DEFENSIVE TACKLE JALEEL JOHNSON
Jaleel Johnson is another future NFL player. He is just clogging everything up the middle and is a large reason for Iowa having a stout defense against the running game. He occupies multiple blockers allowing all the linebackers to run free and untouched. Johnson is playing at an all-conference level.
NO. 1 - CORNERBACK DESMOND KING
He is arguably the best cornerback in college football right now. There's other arguments to be made for guys such as Jourdan Lewis, Vernon Hargreaves, and Jalen Ramsey, but none are making the game changing plays that King is. He has six interceptions on the year and four have come in the important games against Pittsburgh and Wisconsin. He shuts down an entire side of the field and is also lethal as a kick and punt returner. The Hawkeyes have gotten contributions from a lot of different players this year but none greater than the performance of King.
