Iowa Head Coach Fran McCaffery's Thoughts On Impressive Win Over Marquette

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery's thoughts on the dominant win over Marquette, 89-61 on the road in Milwaukee.

Head coach Fran McCaffery couldn't have been happier with his team after their impressive win over Marquette on the road by a score of 89-61. Their domination came in all areas, especially on the defensive end. The Hawkeyes' were also very efficient from the field as they continue to show that they are a much improved team shooting the ball, especially beyond the arc.

McCaffery expressed his pleasure with his team's performance afterwards.

ON HOW THEY ATTACKED THE ZONE DEFENSE...

"There's a variety of htings to run against a zone defense. We do 7 or 8 different things. It's not the what, it's the who. We have guys with experience that can make plays. They recognize the throwback, bring it off the ball screen, hit the high post, go high-low, skip it to the weak side, move it side to side. It puts a lot of pressure on the zone defense. That's what experience does. We have an experienced team and they played that way. Steve (Wojciechowski) has an inexperienced team, but a talented team that's going to be really good. He will have them ready. Early in the season experience is going to be a big advantage."

ON HIS TEAM'S DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCE...

"They have a lot of different weapons off the dribble and two good post players. Henry (Ellenson) goes in and out. We wanted to be in the gaps and put pressure on the ball and stay down on fakes. We wanted to make them shoot over us. Our guys executed the game plan to perfection on the defensive end of the floor. There's no question about that."

"Our help side defense was tremendous. It has to be. If you hug, they'll lob it to (Luke) Fischer, Henry (Ellenson) has more space to drive, Duane Wilson has more space to drive. You have to keep those in. And you have to keep them out. You have to be able to contest them. That's what we did."

"I thought (Jarrod) Uthoff was a tough matchup for Henry (Ellenson). It's Henry's third game going against a fifth year senior that's every bit as long and used to guarding people off the dribble. A lot of 4-men he'll go up against won't be able to guard him off the dribble. Jarrod (Uthoff) can. We got in and when he would drive and spin we were right in his wheelhouse. And (Adam) Woodbury handled (Luke) Fischer by himself. Most of the time you'll need help. They will run some action that will isolate Fischer. Our help side guys were where they were supposed tobe. If you chase out to the corner, they'll lob it over the top."

ON IOWA'S SHOOTING...

"It was great to see (Dom) Uhl knocking them down. You know Peter (Jok) and Jarrod (Uthoff) will. (Anthony) Clemmons is solid. You keep going with Dale (Jones) and Brady (Ellingson). There's a lot of variety of guys. When Steve (Wojciechowski) first went zone, we had more of a driving team in there. We subbed some guys that could spread the floor. We ddi a good job of moving the ball against it."

ON OFFENSE AS A WHOLE...

"25 assists. That's exactly what you want. I would say that's probably our greatest strength as a team. We share the ball. We move the ball. We had six guys in double figures. No one cares about who the leading scorer is. That's a good feeling as a coach."

ON MIKE GESELL...

"(The best thing has been) his decision making. He's mixing up penetration and pull-up jumpers. He's pushing it on the break and seeing the floor. Essentially, he's not making mistakes. When your point guard is not making mistakes, that gives you a chance to score every time you come down. That gives you the chance to win."

ON ADAM WOODBURY...

"He was phenomenal. You need a big, strong body. (Luke) Fischer is a handful, shooting 70 percent from the field. He was working to post, to ride (Adam Woodbury) up the lane. (Woodbury) is a hard guy to do that to. He did a great job of keeping his hans where the refs can see them and not pick up any fouls. We would have went back to him but he's had a little bit of a bum ankle."
