Iowa Hoops Moves Into the Top 5

Adam Woodbury and the Iowa Hawkeyes move into the the top 5 for the first time since January of 1989.

It has been over 27 years since it has happened but the day is here. Iowa has jumped into the top 5 of the coaches poll. The Hawkeyes are ranked 4th in the coaches poll and 3rd in the AP Poll. The last time Iowa was a top 5 team was when they were ranked #5 on January 10, 1989.

Iowa also is #10 according to the RPI and #2 in the KenPom ratings based off a formula by Ken Pomeroy. In addition, many projected brackets now have Iowa  as the 1 or 2-seed opening up NCAA Tournament play in Des Moines.

Iowa got there thanks to some teams ahead of them going down that included SMU, Xavier, Maryland, Kansas, Oklahoma, and West Virginia. The Hawkeyes did not fall victim during the week.

Iowa had a 2-0 week, dominating Rutgers in Piscataway and returning home to handle a ranked Purdue team to complete the sweep of the Boilermakers. The Hawkeyes have now swept both Purdue and Michigan State this year. Their 7-0 conference record also includes wins over Michigan, Rutgers, and Nebraska.

They're getting all-around play from just about everyone. Peter Jok and Jarrod Uthoff score near 20 or even more every single contest, Gesell and Clemmons run the show as floor generals and take care of the ball, Woodbury rebounds and provides toughness on the defensive end and gets everyone where they need to be, and there's punch off the bench with Brady Ellingson, Dom Uhl, Nicholas Baer, and Ahmad Wagner. Fran McCaffery is also trying to score minutes for future point guard Christian Williams.

Fran McCaffery and the Hawkeyes return to action on Thursday when they face Maryland, who is ranked number 7.
