With their first loss in over a month, Iowa has dropped a few spots in the USA Today Coaches' Poll. The Hawkeyes are slotted at 7th this week. The 1-1 week was enough to knock them out of the Top 5 but not completely out of the top 10.
However, Iowa did not drop out of the Top 5 in the AP Poll. Voters kept the Hawkeyes fifth overall.
Iowa used a dominating performance from their regulars against Northwestern on Sunday to prevent their first conference loss from jumpstarting a losing streak. Leading at one point by 29 over the Wildcats, Iowa managed to notch a decisive 85-71 win at home in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The reason for the slip in the polls was their defeat to Maryland earlier in the week. Iowa traveled to College Park and was taken down by the Terrapins who boast one of the more talented rosters in the nation. Despite the loss and poor shooting, the Hawkeyes competed hard in the game and still had a chance to walk away with a victory over the Terps. That likely was the reason they did not fall more than they did.
Mark Turgeon's Terps actually jumped all the way to #3 following their 2-0 week that saw them pull off impressive wins against the Hawkeyse at home and then on the road at Ohio State. While no loss is wanted, that is one Iowa will get a pass for and one that could eventually look very impressive to the committee when tournament time arrives.
Iowa resumes play on Wednesday at home against Penn State.
