Iowa NSD Profile: WR Devonte Young

Profiling and breaking down the latest Iowa signee, wide receiver Devonte Young.

HOMETOWN: Waldorf, Maryland (North Point HS)
POSITION: Wide Receiver
RANKING: Three-Star, #21 WR in East, #154 WR in Country
SIZE: 6-1/210

RECRUITING STORY: It was a pretty simple recruitment for Young with little fanfare. He chose Iowa over Pittsburgh and Rutgers and never looked back. He can sometimes be the forgotten man of the class because he committed back in June and is from Maryland but you'll hear from him in a couple years.

EVALUATION: Young catches the ball and tucks it away quickly, and turns and gets up the field in a flash. He gets off the line of scrimmage well and can beat jams. He extends his hands and catches the ball away from his body. Young gets in and out of his breaks well and his change of direction is an asset. Young high-points the ball and has good ball skills. He needs to work on being more precise on his routes and add strength. - Scout East Recruiting Analyst Brian Dohn

Young is a very fundamentally sound receiver. He does a lot of the little things well like catching the ball with his hands, not his chest, an advanced route-runner, and snatches the ball at the highest point. Because he doesn't have unbelievable size or speed, he doesn't blow you away but he's sneaky in how he gets the job done. He'll have time to develop in Iowa City as a redshirt is extremely likely. That time will allow him to become more explosive, build up his strength, and learn the offense. - Hawkeye Insider Publisher Derek Young
