HOMETOWN: Algona, Iowa (Algona HS)
POSITION: Offensive Guard
RANKING: Two-Star, #9 Player in Iowa
RECRUITING STORY: There wasn't much to this one. He's an in-state prospect typical of what the Hawkeyes have lured in time and time again. He had little attention from recruiting services and other programs. They liked what they saw in camp and offered soon after. It did not take him long to jump on the chance to play close to home.
EVALUATION: In-person evaluations are the best kind there is and that was what the Iowa staff was able to use when scouting Cole Banwart and they jumped on him soon after they saw him in camp. And who am I to critique the Iowa staff on assessing the offensive line position. He has a great college body already. After a year in the weight program with Coach Doyle, he could be primed to compete for a spot on the interior. 6-foot-4 and 280 pounds is a great starting point. Like many from the state, he'll have to adapt to the elevated competition but he should be a road grader on the inside. Technique will be his biggest challenge and he'll have one of the best teachers there is in assistant Brian Ferentz. - Hawkeye Insider Publisher Derek Young
