Iowa NSD Profile: LB Austin Schulte

Profiling and breaking down the latest signee, Austin Schulte.

HOMETOWN: Pella, Iowa (Pella HS)
POSITION: Inside LInebacker
RANKING: Two-Star, #7 Player in Iowa
SIZE: 6-4/230

RECRUITING STORY: He's one of those in-state kids that the staff fell in love with after seeing him camp in person. They offered him after evaluating him live and in-person which is the most accurate way. It did not take long for him to join Iowa's flurry of commits in the month of June.

EVALUATION: A lot of in-state kids end up working out very well for Iowa regardless if they were pursued heavily or not by other programs. They hope that the trend continues in the form of Austin Schulte of Pella. Some have suggested he ends up as a defensive end but I don't see that. He's a very good body type with nice build and power to him but doesn't have the explosiveness or suddenness that you typically see from defensive ends. Because of that, and his size, I think he makes his home at inside linebacker just like Amani Jones and will assuredly take a redshirt season his first year on campus. At 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds that is a great starting point for the position and not a build or frame that you have to shape up too much more. He'll add the standard amount of weight a freshman sees after his first year in the strength and conditioning program and go from there. Unlike Jewell, he's probably developmental and someone that makes their mark in the latter years of his career in Iowa City. I'd like to see him move more fluidly and pick-up some burst and speed in time. - Hawkeye Insider Publisher Derek Young
