HOMETOWN: Sycamore, Illinois (Sycamore HS)
POSITION: Outside Linebacker
RANKING: Three-Star, #14 OLB in Midwest, #64 OLB in Country
RECRUITING STORY: He was apart of the flurry of commits that went Iowa's way during the month of June. Niemann chose the Hawkeyes over some MAC offers as well as Illinois and Iowa State. He's another example of Kirk Ferentz and Iowa winning their share of recruiting battles against Big Ten rivals and taking a few prospects away from the backyard of conference opponents. Having his older brother, Ben Niemann, in the program certainly didn't hurt.
EVALUATION: There's many similarities between him and his brother Ben Niemann, a starting outside linebacker for Iowa as a sophomore. His size and measurables is much like Ben's what at the same stage so there's a lot to be excited about here if he can follow the same track. He has length and a great frame to work with. He runs well but doesn't have the best change of direction. However, when you consider the monumental leaps that Ben took his first two years in the program, you know that the new Hawkeye signee is going to put in the work necessary and maximize his talents. This was a very smart pick-up for Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa staff, not that they need my blessing. The bloodlines and linebacker traits here are strong. Not only does his brother Ben already play at Iowa but his father Jay now coaches the position at Rutgers under their new head coach Chris Ash.
