Iowa NSD Profile: DE Brandon Simon

Profiling and breaking down the latest signee, defensive end Brandon Simon.

HOMETOWN: Ramsey, New Jersey (Don Bosco Prep)
POSITION: Defensive End
RANKING: Three-Star, #5 DE in East, #54 DE in Country
SIZE: 6-1/230

RECRUITING STORY: Iowa snatched away Simon from the northeast so it was an excellent pull to keep him away from programs such as Boston College and Syracuse. The Hawkeyes have shown their power in the northeast portion of the country, beating out local schools for prospects from places like New Jersey and Maryland.

EVALUATION: Simon plays with a low pad level and he improved his hand placement and quickness a lot during his senior season. He can disengage and locate the ball carrier, his instincts are a plus and he can chase a play down. Simon is a bit undersized but he has the athleticism to drop into coverage. He committed to Iowa to play defensive end, but the Hawkeyes may be able to shift him around. He knows how to dip his shoulder and get to the edge. - Scout East Recruiting Analyst Brian Dohn

Because of the lack of depth at defensive end and the possible challenge of having to replace two new starters, I think he is someone that will challenge for playing time right away. The depth chart is promising and he comes from a high school program that is very good at getting players prepared for the next level. Don Bosco Prep is one of the top high schools in the country. He's advanced technically, and though undersized, that is something Iowa can work with. They'll need pass rushers and he can provide that. - Hawkeye Insider Publisher Derek Young
