Iowa Dominates Penn State: The Takeaways

Iowa dominates Penn State to the tune of 73-49.

Iowa keeps marching right along as they never left much doubt at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Wednesday. The Hawkeyes dominated Penn State by a score of 73-49.

It was a huge game from Adam Woodbury, Anthony Clemmons, and Ahmad Wagner. Woodbury finished the game with 15 rebounds, a career high, to go with his 5 points. Clemmons was one of three scorers in double figures with 12 points. Peter Jok also had 12 and Uthoff lead the team with 14.

They've played sharper, and they've been more fundamentally sound, but the Hawkeyes just keep making it look easy in the Big Ten. All of their conference contests but two have resulted in wins of double-digit margins.

Here are the takeaways...

BUSINESS AS USUAL...

Iowa crushed Penn State tonight without breaking a sweat. They did the same thing to Northwestern last Sunday before the starters were pulled. This seems too easy for them. They went through the gauntlet of Michigan State and Purdue twice plus Michigan and Maryland. Now in games against Penn State and Northwestern, they seem bored. The effort isn't down but they definitely aren't being tested like they were and it just seems like they can put the hammer down whenever they want to.

EXPERIMENTAL LINEUP...

Fran used the lineup of Dom Uhl, Nicholas Baer, Brady Ellingson, and Ahmad Wagner together again. It was in meaningful minutes but the point guard with them was either Mike Gesell or Anthony Clemmons. He used this lineup three different times. McCaffery is definitely got his eye on the future at this point.

WHAT MORE CAN THEY DO...

Iowa has won the tough road games at Michigan State and Purdue. They've swept both. They defeated Michigan. Their only conference loss was a road game at Maryland. They've went through a gauntlet in the Big Ten already, had a tough non-conference slate. It's a team that has been challenged in every way but they're still meeting each one. They're beating the good teams, they're beating the great teams, they're winning on the road, and they're crushing teams they are much better than. They're doing all they can. They're a one seed.

FREE THROW PROBLEMS NOT GOING AWAY...

If there's one flaw on this team this is the area. It seems like it is this area every night. It's a trend. These usually don't go away magically. The Hawkeyes are just going to have to put themselves in spots where they're free throw shooting won't cost them. The percentage wasn't bad tonight. They were 17-26 for 65 percent. But they went through a stretch where they missed five in a row between Ahmad Wagner and Dom Uhl. That can't happen.

AHMAD WAGNER EARNING HIS MINUTES...

It seems like we are at that point in his developmental process where he's actually getting better every game and it's to a point where it's so vivid that everyone can see. He's crashing the boards, he's playing tough, he's being more physical than the opponent, he's converting shots, he's looking for his own offensive game, and he's a strong finisher. They usually call these guys 'glue guys'. He's all that and more and if you haven't noticed, his minutes have gone up lately. Wagner is a very important player to this machine Fran McCaffery has revved up right now.
