Fran McCaffery on Iowa's win over Penn State

Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery was thrilled with the effort from Iowa in their 73-49 win over Penn State on Wednesday.

Iowa improved to 9-1 in Big Ten play after Wednesday's 73-49 win over Penn State at home. It was a victory that came with relative ease for the Hawkeyes who have dismantled many of their conference foes so far.

Peter Jok, Jarrod Uthoff, and Anthony Clemmons reached double figures. Uthoff lead the way with 14 points while Peter Jok and Anthony Clemmons had 12 apiece. Dom Uhl, Nicholas Baer, and Ahmad Wagner provided 8 points off the bench. Adam Woodbury cleaned up the glass with 15 rebounds.

Here's what head coach Fran McCaffery had to say afterwards.

ON THE DEFENSE...

"Well, I thought right from the outset, our defense set the tone. We got stops. We got run-outs and kind of established how we want to play."

"I mean, I'd like to think our defense was completely responsible for (Penn State shooting 1 for 20 from three point line). They had a bad night. I mean, this team has better three-point shooters. Okay, they don't have the greatest percentage, I know, it's right around 30. But normally Garner's going to make a couple. Banks will make a couple. Taylor will make a couple. So they just started taking everything to the basket."

"It was great (to get off to a fast start). I thought we really were locked in to throwing it ahead and attacking it in transition. You can do that, but you've got to do it. It's much better to do it after stops. We were getting stops."

ON AHMAD WAGNER...

"Especially at the time, we go to our bench and (Ahmad) makes a big-time play. He gets a big-time rebound when we needed some second shots; we missed a few. But he's just a guy that really understands how to play, knows what to do, and he's a spectacular athlete and he impacts the game. He's another guy, every game, he gets better."

ON GESELL'S DIP IN NUMBERS...

"No, he's fine. I don't know (why his numbers have gone down). I mean, I thought he played a really good floor game tonight. He's just having trouble getting it in."

WOODBURY'S REBOUNDING...

"Yeah (he had 15 rebounds), and I wanted to put him back in there, but I didn't need him to get hurt there. He was spectacular all night long because they were hard-earned traffic rebounds. That's the thing about Penn State. They are coming after the ball when it comes off the rim, so you have to be able to get traffic rebounds and be strong with the ball, because even if you get it, they are going to come after it."

ON RESPONSE TO THE LOSS AGAINST MARYLAND...

"It's been businesslike. They were businesslike before the game, after the game. I just keep saying the same thing over and over. You know, I don't expect anything different from them. They were like that last year, and they were like that the year before."

"I think everybody panicked a little when we lost some games at the end of the season a couple years ago, but we played fairly well in those games. We lost to really good teams and we lost close games and we learned from it. We've been better last yera and we've been better this year."
