Ask D: Iowa Mailbag March 27

Derek Young of Hawkeye Insider answers your question weekly about the Iowa Hawkeyes.

DOES DJIMON COLBERT WORK HIS WAY INTO THE SCOUT 300?

He actually started in the Scout 300 and fell out of it already. With a good camp circuit and strong season that show he's worthy, he can certainly jump back into it. I do not see it. I think he's a low four-star prospect and expect him to stay there. He's really athletic and has great size but a lot of it is based off upside right now. If he showcases much improved speed and increased physicality that would help him.

WHO IS GOING TO BE VISITING IOWA FOR THE SPRING GAME?

It's still about a month away so there hasn't been much planning yet from prospects. We'll have a comprehensive list the closer it gets but it's a bit too early to dive into it just yet. I do expect a lot of the in-state targets to be there.

WHO ARE THE TOP 5 WIDE RECEIVERS FOR THIS YEAR'S NFL DRAFT?

I think the best one is Laquon Treadwell of Ole Miss but my favorite one is Corey Coleman of Baylor. Michael Thomas of Ohio State would make that cut. The next two is up for debate. I would side with Tyler Boyd of Pittsburgh and Will Fuller of Notre Dame. Others like Braxton Miller of Ohio State and also Josh Doctson of TCU.

AGREE OR DISAGREE ON THESE COMPARISONS, BEN SIMMONS IS LAMAR ODOM AND BRANDON INGRAM IS TAYSHAUN PRINCE?

I'm not as high on Ben Simmons. He isn't a good shooter so he'll have to play closer to the basket in my opinion in the NBA. He's not Lamar Odom because of that. He's more Michael Beasley than anything but a better ball handler. Brandon Ingram is more of an oddity to me. I think his length and shooting is a lot like Prince but he's far more athletic.

MORE LIKELY TO MAKE AN IMPACT NEXT YEAR, NICK BOSA OR RASHAN GARY?

I'll say Gary. He can play inside and out along the defensive line and has no health concerns right now while Bosa is recovering from a knee injury.

WHO DO YOU THINK WILL START NEXT YEAR FOR IOWA BASKETBALL?

I think the locks would be Dom Uhl, Peter Jok, and Ahmad Wagner. That leaves a point guard and a center and my preliminary guess would be Tyler Cook and Christian Williams.

WHO DO YOU THINK WINS THE BATTLE BETWEEN AARON MENDS AND JACK HOCKADAY?

Mends. He played much more last year, is more athletic, and I think he plays better in space and is a perfect fit to fill Cole Fisher's role. Hockaday is bigger and they like him but he's almost more suited to play Ben Niemann's position in my opinion.

DO YOU THINK THERE WILL BE ANY MORE 'BIG NAMES' ADDED TO THE RECRUITING BOARD THIS SUMMER? BESIDES BENJAMIN, IOWA REALLY DOESN'T HAVE ANY OTHER SCOUT-RATED HIGH PROSPECTS SO I AM CURIOUS IF THIS WILL CHANGE EITHER BY ADDING NEW NAMES OR IF YOU THINK NAMES WILL MOVE INTO THE SCOUT 300. I DID NOTICE TRISTAN WIRFS FELL TO A 3-STAR.

There's always new names added. Half the class that signs in February probably has yet to be offered at this time. Only the first stages of the recruiting cycle have passed. New names will appear in the Scout 300 and emerge that nobody knows about right now. Iowa could end up among favorites for prospects rated highly that they aren't exactly in the mix for right now. It's still early and a lot will happen. Wirfs did fall but he's a good one. Kallenberger and Dykstra will probably jump up in some capacity.
