It was difficult to focus on writing about a football game as I know several people that worked in the financial institutions housed in the World Trade Centers. Tom Rollins, who was my guest at the Kent State game, was able to make it out from the 77th floor of WTC II. I don't know about others. Therefore, my anger may be affecting my writing of this story.
Saturday would have been quite an offensive show. Cyclone coach Dan McCarney has likened QB Seneca Wallace to Miami Dolphin great Dan Marino while Iowa's Kyle McCann has just had a 4 touchdown passing performance against Miami. Therefore, the balls would have been flying in Ames.
ISU has had a big win over a pathetic 1-AA team, UNI. The Cyclones barely had to break a sweat in jumping to a 38-0 lead. One of my friends thought that UNI was the worst team to ever play in Jack Trice stadium. Therefore, it is really hard to gauge the Cyclone's performance. Naturally, a Cyclone might add that Kent State can not be a good measuring stick, either. After all, Kent is mired down at the bottom of division 1 ratings. I can't disagree with that.
However, Iowa has had an impressive victory over Miami, a division 1 team that gave Big Blue a much better game than the 31-13 score indicates. Iowa led Miami 44-0 before wholesale substition was used by the Iowa brain trust.
McCann demonstrated his ability to throw down the field with his 50+ yard strike to Kahlil Hill in the end zone. Add Brad Banks who has a gun for an arm, and Iowa has long strike ability from anywhere on the field. However, Iowa will be able to run the ball on ISU. Iowa's ever improving offensive line should be able to open holes in the most suspect part of ISU's defense, the defensive line.
Iowa State would have a much tougher time running the ball. Their rebuilt offensive line has size and some experience but Iowa's defensive front is huge and tough. In addition, the Iowa linebacker corps has shown an ability to stuff the run. Therefore, Iowa State must be able to throw the pigskin.
Due to the cowardly acts of terrorism, the game has been postponed. It could have been a great aerial battle.
