Ask D: Iowa Mailbag April 11

Derek Young of Hawkeye Insider answers your weekly on questions about Iowa on Scout.

DOES IOWA LAND ENO BENJAMIN ON APRIL 18 AND WHOSE RUNNING STYLE DOES HE REMIND YOU OF?

I do like the Shonn Greene comparisons that has been mentioned by posters on here. For a non-Iowa reference, maybe LaDainian Tomlinson? At least compared to what he was in the NFL with the New York Jets. He was a smaller than normal back that had to be more physical in the NFL and allow his patience and vision to do the work. I think Iowa lands him on April 18.

WHO WOULD YOU PICK, PEAK CHRIS PAUL OR PEAK STEVE NASH?

I have a little problem with both because neither has a championship. I think that may have more to do with the league being much different, nowadays. Elite point guards don't win. They can't control games the way guys like Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Stephen Curry, Kawhi Leonard, or Paul George can. And before anyone interjects; Russell Westbrook, James Harden, and Steph Curry aren't real point guards, especially not Westbrook or Harden.

But to answer the question, give me Steve Nash. I love Chris Paul but Nash turned himself into a great shooter and distributed the ball like John Stockton. Too bad he couldn't hung around in Dallas a bit longer and won a title with Dirk Nowitzki.

WHO WOULD YOU PICK, DEFOREST BUCKNER OR JOEY BOSA?

This would depend on the team I was because one guy has high ceiling and low floor, while the other is a safe pick and will be productive no matter what but may not have as high of upside as the other. Buckner can be a monster but he could also be a dud. I think Bosa is going to be productive for a long, long time in the NFL. And I don't think Bosa is J.J. Watt like some try to say. Watt weighs much more and is a rare breed. Bosa won't be sliding inside ever at the next level.

But I know what I'm getting with Bosa. And I think he'll be a Jared Allen type. And I'd take that all day instead of the unknown that is Buckner.

WHO ARE YOUR THREE MOST UNDERRATED PLAYERS IN THE NBA?

A few guys that get little love and it may have to do with the market that they play in are Kyle Lowry and Damian Lillard. I'm also going to show some appreciation for the little guy, Isaiah Thomas of the Celtics.

WHO BECOMES THE NO. 3 WIDE RECEIVER BEHIND MATT VANDEBERG AND JERMINIC SMITH?

Right now it is Riley McCarron and the coaching staff and his teammates love everything about him. It's going to be tough to knock him off that ledge it seems even though I thought he would settle back into the role he owned a year ago. If not McCarron, it sure seems like it becomes Jonathan Parker or Jay Scheel. Adrian Falconer seems to not have made any kind of jump yet.

WHAT IS IOWA GOING TO DO WITH THE LAST BASKETBALL SCHOLARSHIP?

I don't see a post-grad transfer point guard being an option. For one, it usually means only a year of eligibility and Iowa would be better served banking the scholarship and using it on a four-year player in 2017 to group with Connor McCaffery and someone else. I would think they'll try to go all in for a guy like Charlie Moore who just decommitted from Memphis, and bank it for 2017 if they strike out.

HOW IS 'NO DECISON' EVEN ALLOWED TO HAPPEN IN REGARDS TO DREW OTT?

'No decision' is not the case. There have been many decisions but they've all been negative. Iowa has re-appealed several times according to assistant Reese Morgan. This would have been over a long time ago. Iowa is just fighting it tooth and nail for Drew Ott and that is why we are still where we are at the moment.

HAS THERE BEEN ANY INFORMATION OR NEWS REGARDING AN EARLY SIGNING PERIOD FOR FOOTBALL?

It has been discussed over and over for multiple years but there hasn't been enough support to pass anything substantial yet. I think the day is coming but I'm not sure how close we truly are to that day.

HOW DID TYLER WIEGERS LOOK AT THE OPEN PRACTICE?

He looked solid. He wasn't out of place but he wasn't super special either. He's certainly made a lot of progress from a year ago. Beathard's injuries last season may have been a blessing in disguise because it gave him a lot of first team reps in practice. He's coming along and is on schedule I think. He's definitely settled in and much more comfortable.

IS THE SPRING GAME, SCRIMMAGE, PRACTICE, WHATEVER IT IS, NEXT SATURDAY APRIL 16? WILL IT BE ON TV?

Yeah, I'm not sure what they have planned for it either but it is scheduled for April 23. So a little less than two weeks away. I imagine BTN will air it in some capacity, possibly a tape delay, but as of now nothing has been released.
