HAS THERE BEEN ANY TALK FROM THE STAFF OF GETTING WIEGERS MEANINGFUL GAME REPS IN GAME SITUATIONS? PARTICULARLY DURING THE NON-CONFERENCE SLATE? IS THERE AN IDEA TO GET TYLER A MINIMUM OF 'X' NUMBER OF SERIES AND IN-GAME SITUATIONS, PREFERABLY IN THE FIRST HALF OF GAMES AGAINST THE OPPONENTS FIRST TEAM? I WOULD SEE THIS AS PROTECTING C.J. BEATHARD'S HEALTH, AS WELL.
If the game is still competitive, C.J. Beathard will be the quarterback. There's been no discussion about that because it isn't warranted. The future is important but they know they have a short window of making a long, deep run with Beathard at the helm and they aren't going to endanger it just for Wiegers to step in. There's not another team in the country that regularly gets their back-up action in meaningful situations just because they are thinking down the line. They all try to win that game and the best player will be in the game.
Helping Beathard's health would mean they take it easy during the practice for the week. He gets the mental reps to prepare for the opponent but he knows his own offense. His practice reps would be limited and Wiegers would get those. Those helped him a lot last year.
SHONN GREENE HAS BEEN MENTIONED AS A COMPARISON FOR ENO BENJAMIN. I SEE SOME DALVING COOK, DO YOU AGREE?
I would disagree. He doesn't have the same burst or top-end speed as Cook. They're different backs.
HOW MUCH INFLUENCE DO YOU THINK ENO BENJAMIN HAS IN HELPING GET VERY GOOD TEXAS PLAYERS TO IOWA?
Just because he's in the fold doesn't mean Iowa will automatically lure guys in. But they'll get a longer look because of Eno Benjamin. They may get visits and more of a chance because of Eno's presence.
WHICH WIDE RECEIVER DO YOU LIKE BETTER IN THE DRAFT, TYLER BOYD OR WILL FULLER?
I love Boyd as a sleeper wideout in this draft but I'd still take Fuller over him. The drops worry me with Fuller but not many guys are as faster or as gifted. But Boyd is my value pick at wideout in this class because he'll be available after the first round whereas Fuller, Coleman, Doctson, and Treadwell won't.
WHICH DEFENSIVE END DO YOU LIKE BETTER IN THE DRAFT, LEONARD FLOYD OR KEVIN DODD?
I don't love either. Floyd wasn't as productive as he should have been. Dodd is a decent player but I don't think he's a standout. He just bursted onto the scene this past year. It makes you wonder what happened before that. He wasn't the best defensive end on his own team. Having said that, I'd gamble with Floyd over Dodd.
DO THE MIAMI HEAT HAVE ANY CHANCE TO BEAT CLEVELAND IN THE EAST?
Well I certainly thought they'd beat Charlotte and they may not even get past the Hornets now. Having said that, I had Miami over Charlotte but losing to Indiana or Toronto. My winners in the East were Cleveland, Boston, Miami, and Toronto. I had Cleveland over Boston and Toronto over Miami followed by Cleveland over Toronto in the Eastern Conference Finals.
RIKO JEFFERS, IS HE GOING TO GET AN OFFER?
As much as they're laying it on heavy in Texas, I think so. But he's an inside linebacker and they may not need a ton of help there. They got Amani Jones last year plus Garbutt and Jewell both return.
WHICH ANALYST ARE YOU A BIGGER FAN OF, GREG COSELL OR MIKE MAYOCK?
I'm a big fan of Mike Mayock, Daniel Jeremiah, and Todd McShay.
WHICH EDGE RUSHER DO YOU LIKE MORE, KEVIN DODD OR SHAQ LAWSON?
Lawson. That's easy for me. He has better physical traits, more explosion, and a terrific motor. I think he's going to be very good at the next level.
WHICH BIG-NAME RECRUITS IN FOOTBALL IS IOWA AFTER NOW?
Well they would love to have the Texas kids in Kamron Fields and his wideout Shamond Greenwood. I think they're going to try to flip Zach Dykstra the whole way through. Oliver Martin could get offered at some point. Another wideout they like and he was in town for the Spring Game is Maurice Bell from California. A linebacker would be Colin Anderson from Alabama. A couple defensive backs are Keontae Jones from Cincinnati, Jordan Rowell from Illinois, and Josiah Scott from Fairfield, Ohio.
WHAT KIND OF QUARTERBACK IS KAMRON FIELDS? WHY ONLY GRANTED 2-STAR STATUS FROM SCOUT?
He's a very raw kid that is a developmental project. He has good arm velocity but the accuracy is a little wild at the moment. He's a dual-threat type prospect. But he doesn't have to make a lot of decisions in his high school offense. He's just a first-read guy at the moment and throws it right away. You don't get a sense for his pocket presence, his awareness, how he can go through his progressions, and his football IQ. If you watch his film, he fires it away on his first read at the time. All you can tell from the film is that he has good arm velocity, decent arm strength, and is quite an athlete.
IF DESMOND KING HAD ENTERED THE DRAFT, AT WHAT POINT DO YOU THINK HE WOULD HAVE BEEN DRAFTED?
Well I don't think he'd be ahead of the four corners that will go in the first round in Jalen Ramsey, Vernon Hargreaves, Eli Apple, and William Jackson. He doesn't have the size or speed that they have so it's probably a great move that he decided to return. I think he could have snuck into the end of the first round. Watch where Artie Burns from Miami gets drafted. That is likely where King would have went.
DO YOU FEEL THAT TYLER WIEGERS COULD SUCCESSFULLY RUN THE SHOW IF NECESSARY?
I think he would do a sufficient job but he isn't C.J. Beathard. He wouldn't be able to create with his legs and he can't make all the throws that C.J. can. But he's good enough to run the show. The playmaking ability just wouldn't be there when things break down.
WHICH WIDE RECEIVERS CAN HELP BEYOND MATT VANDEBERG AND HOPEFULLY RILEY MCCARRON AND JERMINIC SMITH?
I think the first guy up is Jay Scheel. They are starting to trust him. Once you get past him, it's probably between Jonathan Parker and Adrian Falconer, with Parker likely having the edge at this point. I'm not going to hop on the Ryan Boyle bandwagon yet because it's still in the early stages and we've seen so very little, but he could find a role behind Scheel possibly?
WHICH TIGHT ENDS CAN CONTRIBUTE BEYOND GEORGE KITTLE?
You'd like to think it would be Jameer Outsey but something seemed to be off with him in the Spring. He wasn't getting the reps that Peter Pekar was at times which was strange. Is it an injury or a motivational tactic? Hard to say but they want more from him. I'm not sure they are comfortable with relying on Wisnieski or Pekar too much. Maybe it'll be a true freshman, Fant or Hockenson?
BEST NFL COMPARISON YOU HAVE FOR JALEN RAMSEY?
I'm not saying he's the caliber of the two, though he may be, but I think his game will be similar to the multiple-type defensive backs such as Troy Polamalu and Tyrann Mathieu. He is bigger than Mathieu though and can lock up on the outside and not just in the slot. He may not have the thickness to compete in the muck that is the front 7 on a regular basis as Polamalu but he's that type of ball-chaser.
BEST NFL COMPARISON YOU HAVE FOR LAQUON TREADWELL?
He isn't a burner or some long, sleek wideout. He's a bigger dude that would be reminiscent of someone like Anquan Boldin or Alshon Jeffery. Vincent Jackson might be another good example.
