Ask D&D: Iowa Mailbag may 20

Derek and Dylan tackle the Iowa questions for the week, centering around the recruitments of Kamron Fields, Shamond Greenwood, Oliver Martin, and Camron Buckley, as well as some NBA talk.

WHO DOES JAMAL MURRAY COMPARE TO IN THE NBA?

Dylan: Jamal Murray I think compares a lot of CJ McCollum. Both are pretty good shooters with good size. Murray will play off the ball in the NBA. He isn't a point guard. He had more turnovers than assists this past season at Kentucky.

Derek: I'll let Dylan's answer stand here. He's far better in this area than me and I wouldn't know where to exactly start as I'm not too knowledgable on Murray.

DO YOU GIVE IOWA A DECENT CHANCE WITH SHAMOND GREENWOOD?

Dylan: I think if Iowa gets a commit from Kamron Fields that Greenwood could follow. If that doesn't take place then I don't think the Hawks land a commit from Greenwood.

Derek: Only if they can reel in Kamron Fields at quarterback do I give them much of a shot. They need that connection, I believe.

WHAT NFL CORNERBACK DOES DESMOND KING COMPARE TO?

Dylan: I know it might be a stretch here, but I want to say Patrick Peterson. King has outstanding ball skills and could return punts at the next level just like he's doing in college. Peterson is the same type of player, but is on another level at this point, obviously.

Derek: I don't see Patrick Peterson in Desmond King. Peterson has rare athleticism, speed, and hip flexibility that I don't think King really touches. King is not the freak athlete that Peterson is. I would equate King more to Chris Harris of the Broncos or Damarious Randall of the Packers. Both are very underrated in the NFL, and very good against the run, set the edge well, and are sure-tacklers. They both have some background at safety which King could end up doing as well. They have nose for the ball, more of technicians than speedsters, exhibit great footwork and choose to bait the quarterback into mistakes more than anything.

BETTER BALL HANDLER, STEPH CURRY OR KYRIE IRVING?

Dylan: I'll take Curry here. Some of the things that guy does with the ball are unreal.

Derek: It might seem crazy but Kyrie Irving probably provides more flash, actually, in my opinion. But he's also prone to a few more turnovers. I'll go Kyrie Irving here as I think he's a better ball handler, but Curry a better passer and shooter, obviously. Curry does his damage with ball handling, but also quickness and the quick trigger. Kyrie is a better ball handler but not the quickness, vision, or quick release that Curry possesses.

WHAT EXACTLY IS 'THE OPENING'?

Derek: It is a camp in Beaverton, Oregon that only the best players in the country get invited to. It is put on by the folks at Nike. They make their limited selections at all the regional camps they host in places such as Chicago, Columbus, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Dallas, New Jersey, etc. It is usually a camp and combine setting full of five-stars and four-star prospects. Many of the top 100 recruits in America are in attendance for it. They go through combine testing, positional drills, one-on-one competition, and 7v7 games. They also host an Elite 11 finals where they pick out the best quarterbacks in the country.

HOW FAST IS OLIVER MARTIN?

Dylan: Oliver Martin lists his 40 time at 4.5 on his Hudl tape and when you're watching film on him he looks sneaky fast to me. Kind of surprised Iowa hasn't offered yet.

Derek: He ran a 4.65 40 at The Opening regional in Chicago but that was on a pretty cold day outside in the Windy City. He's probably about a 4.5 guy and that time is only getting better. He plays just as fast, if not faster.

DOES IOWA HAVE A CHANCE WITH CAMRON BUCKLEY?

Dylan: Buckley has Iowa in his top 7 so obviously there is a chance.  I don't have much Intel and haven't spoken to him, but Iowa is in the discussion.

Derek: I don't see it being likely at all. I think they are in the top 7 because they are pursuing him with a lot of aggression but I think he ultimately wants to play in an offense that throws the ball a bit more than the Hawkeyes do.

WITH THE RECENT ACTIVITY AND ADDITIONAL OFFERS SURROUNDING THE RECRUITMENT OF KAMRON FIELDS, HOW DO YOU SEE OUR CHANCES NOW? YOU WERE FAIRLY CONFIDENT IOWA WOULD LAND HIM, ARE YOU STILL CONFIDENT?

Dylan: Derek has been the one in touch with Fields. He's wanted to explore a little more, which worries me. Because to me that says he isn't too high on Iowa. Whether or not that is true, I am not sure.  Iowa does have competition at this point that's for sure.

Derek: I don't think the chances for Fields have dropped much, if any. I think he's exploring other options and wants to take a few more visits, but Iowa still remains in a comfortable spot. The longer it goes, the more difficult to land him it may be, though. Other schools are taking notice and more offers are coming. Minnesota just offered Fields as well. A few others are interested as well.
