SHOULD WE EXPECT BUCKLEY TO COMMIT JULY 22 ON HIS VISIT? I READ SOMEWHERE THAT THE STAFF DIDN'T WANT TO ACCEPT HIS COMMITMENT UNTIL HE ACTUALLY VISITED TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS A FIT. DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?
DEREK: The plan at one time was for Holmes to commit, Hankins to commit, Boyce to flip, and then Buckley to commit. The Texas prospects had discussed that as a plan and order of events. Holmes and Hankins went for Iowa but Boyce is now re-considering that plan and sticking with Texas. Buckley intended on committing to the Hawkeyes on his visit July 22. However, he almost popped for Iowa a week ago after all his buddies visited. Fast forward to today, and how he's going to play for Texas A&M. The Aggies' offer yesterday was too significant not to jump on it almost immediately.
WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR RUSS YEAST?
DYLAN: Yeast is planning a visit in July. He's also visiting a couple other schools as well. Last I heard he hasn't decided when he'll be making his decision.
DEREK: If Yeast visits Iowa in July like he wants to and plans to, it could end there. If not, it could drag on into official visits in the Fall.
WHICH OF THESE GUYS IS IOWA IN THE BEST SHAPE WITH; SCOTTY NELSON, RUSS YEAST, CHEVIN CALLOWAY, OR KOBE BOYCE?
DYLAN: In order, I think it goes Yeast, Nelson, Boyce, Calloway. Yeast really likes Iowa, and so does Nelson but he has some other offers that have intrigued him. Once Boyce takes a visit to Austin I think that seals the deal on him. Calloway is being sought after by many top programs so that will be a dogfight and I don't think Iowa wins it.
DEREK: They have the best chances with Yeast of the four. I think Nelson commits to Michigan State on his visit to the Spartans. I think Boyce reaffirms to the Longhorns soon. Calloway is a tough grab, too.
WHICH LINEBACKER DOES IOWA HAVE THE BEST SHOT WITH IN 2017?
DYLAN: As Derek pointed out in his recruiting hot board, Marcus Bowman is really the only LB in play for Iowa in 2017.
DEREK: If Iowa grabs a linebacker, I think it will be Marcus Bowman of Maryland or someone they have yet to offer.
WHICH 3-STAR RECRUIT PRESENTLY COMMITTED WOULD YOU THINK END UP AS 4-STAR RECRUITS?
DYLAN: I think Mark Kallenberger had the best chance to get the bump to four star. I really like his game. Active hands, good feet, blocks until the play is over. I think he can work on his pad height a little bit, but this kid is really talented. There is a reason Oklahoma was chasing too.
DEREK: Keep an eye on Matt Hankins, Gavin Holmes, and Mark Kallenberger. Tristan Wirfs possibly could jump back to a 4-star with a good senior season of film.
COMPARE NATE STANLEY TO PEYTON MANSELL. ONE PUT UP BIG NUMBERS HIS SENIOR SEASON AGAINST COMPETITION IN WISCONSIN AND THE OTHER WILL DO IT IN TEXAS. IF THEY'RE IN THE SAME CLASS, WHICH ONE ARE YOU TAKING AND WHY?
DYLAN: Stanley is bigger. About 2 inches taller and 20 pounds heavier. I think Stanley has a bigger arm and the ball comes out of his hand so smooth. They are both about the same in terms of mobility, and if I had to take one guy of the two. I'd take Nate Stanley. Looks to me like the better prospect.
DEREK: I think Nate Stanley is head and shoulders a better prospect and will be better for the Hawkeyes. I think Stanley is going to be the starting quarterback for Iowa sooner rather than later. That's how well I think of him. He has a rocket arm, smart player, and the work ethic is out of this world. He was also a three-sport athlete so that kind of tells you that there should still be a lot of room for growth since he now can focus more on football than he ever has before. I think Stanley has a far better arm, better body, and is more of an athlete.
IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING, WHO WOULD YOU PICK AND WHY? SHAMOND GREENWOOD, MAC HIPPENHAMMER, OR OLIVER MARTIN.
DYLAN: That's actually a tough one for me because I think all three would be really nice fits for Iowa, but I think Oliver Martin has the most upside of the bunch. Martin had blown up ever since being named the MVP at WR at the opening regional in Chicago and will compete in the finals in Oregon. The kid is good.
DEREK: Of the three, I would go with Oliver Martin because he's in-state and has an offer. That trumps everything because you don't turn them away in these instances. I also think Martin is a very, very good player. I think the better prospect of the three may be Greenwood, but Martin would be the pick because he's close to that and from home.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER CURRENT ROSTER NON-SCHOLARSHIP PLAYERS THAT MAY GET A FREE RIDE DUE TO THE ATTRITION?
DEREK: I think Brandon Snyder has already gobbled up a scholarship along with Tyler Kluver. The only other one that would kind of make sense as Miguel Recinos if he wins the kicker job. I'm still skeptical that it happens however because it's hard to justify having two kickers on scholarship. We may be finished for this year on rewarding walk-ons with a scholarship.
