Iowa hosts one of their top recruiting events of the year this upcoming weekend. The Hawkeye Tailgater weekends have been a big hit for Kirk Ferentz's program and has proved to be very effective as well. It is a recruiting weekend that attracts top prospects and their families to a cookout of sorts to where they can familiarize themselves with the campus, program, coaching staff, fellow recruits and their families, as well as current players in some cases.
The event has been a driving force for this year's class as well as the class in 2016. This weekend's Hawkeye Tailgater will be centered around the 2018 class for the most part. To see a list of confirmed visitors, CLICK HERE.
Aside from Russ Yeast, a top target in the 2017 class, the headliner expected in Iowa City is 2018 defensive tackle Michael Thompson of St. Louis (Mo.) Parkway North. Thompson is the nation's second best defensive tackle in the 2018 class and an early four-star prospect.
In addition to Iowa, Thompson holds offers from Florida, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisville, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Ohio State. He's definitely a candidate to be a five-star prospect in the 2018 class.
Thompson confirmed to Derek Young of Hawkeye Insider that he will be at Iowa this weekend.
"I will be visiting Iowa this weekend," he delivered in a message.
Thompson has yet to narrow down his list at all but he was very complimentary of the Hawkeyes.
"I like Iowa," he admitted. "That's a place I could see myself at."
