Iowa will likely hit the offensive line a little harder in the 2018 recruiting class and one of the targets could be Peoria (Ill.) offensive tackle Marques Cox. Cox already holds an offer from Iowa State but has been receiving a strong amount of interest from Iowa and Illinois. At already 6-foot-5 and 285 pounds, he's going to be one of the more sought-after offensive line recruits in the Midwest for his class.
Cox visited Iowa for their big recruiting weekend at the end of July and came away very impressed with the program on his first trip to the campus.
"It was great," Cox said. "I think I'm nearing an offer. They just want to see me during the season first."
The Hawkeye staff stood out to Cox while he was in Iowa City and that was one of his big takeaways from the trip.
"I really like the coaches and the environment," he shared. "It was really fun to be around the coaches and hang with them. Coach Brian Ferentz was very funny and fun to be around."
Of course Brian Ferentz is the offensive line coach at Iowa and does a lot of Iowa's recruiting in Illinois. So he will be one of the focal points in the recruitment of Cox. The strong first impression of the Iowa assistant could only help the Hawkeyes' chances with Cox should they choose to jump into the ring and extend him an offer.
What would an Iowa offer mean to Cox? He shared that with Scout.
"It might (be tough to turn down)," he admitted. "I got a lot of time to go on my recruiting process and I'll probably get many more opportunities and have other schools interest. I just have to be hungry but humbled."
Cox will be one of the many visitors the Hawkeyes will host for the annual rivalry game against Iowa State. The Battle for the CyHawk Trophy returns to Kinnick Stadium this season.
