A new season is upon us. Iowa opened up fall camp with their first practice today. And also with a new season comes college football polls. The first USA Today Coaches' Poll was released moments ago and the Hawkeyes debut as the 15th best team in the country. The full list can be seen HERE.
There's little to argue one way or the other on Iowa's initial ranking. There's still a little bit to prove on both sides of the ball in some critical areas, such as the passing game offensively and rushing the passer on the other end. However, they deserve some preseason praise as well as most of the stars from the undefeated regular season a year ago return, specifically C.J. Beathard, Desmond King, Jaleel Johnson, and Josey Jewell.
The season's beginning top 10 teams in order are Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma, Florida State, Ohio State, LSU, Stanford, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Tennessee.
Two teams that I think are getting a little too much of a boost in the beginning are Alabama and Ohio State. Both are fully capable of reloading in quick fashion, but there's a lot of holes to fill. Two teams getting much less respect than I anticipated are LSU and Stanford.
The Big Ten fared very well. Ohio State was the highest ranked at 5th, but Michigan also begins at 8th, Michigan State at 11th, and of course the Hawkeyes at 15th. So the conference gets quite a bit of love in the loftiness of the rankings, but only have four make the Top 25.
The Hawkeyes begin the season on September 3 in Kinnick Stadium against Miami (OH).
