It's that time of the year again. High School football is back. Last night marked the first full friday of high school football in the state of Iowa and in many other states across America. We share how each Iowa commit and recruiting target fared over the weekend.
*Quarterback Peyton Mansell lead Belton to a victory in Week 1 with a strong performance under center, doing his damage through the air and on the ground. Mansell was very, very efficient as he completed 16-19 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown. He also had 59 rushing yards and another touchdown.
*Running back Eno Benjamin reeled off 156 yards and 2 touchdowns on 23 carries in his opener that saw Wylie East defeat Rockwall-Heath. He also completed both of his two passes he attempted for 37 yards passing.
*Perhaps the strongest performance of all the commits on Friday night was running back Ivory Kelly-Martin who took the ball 24 times for 222 yards and 4 touchdowns in his debut with Oswego East.
*Wide receiver commit Gavin Holmes of Justin (Texas) Northwest caught 11 passes on Friday night for 124 yards. He also had a carry for 19 yards.
*Defensive line commit Levi Duwa of Mid-Prairie hauled in a touchdown reception on Friday to go along with two sacks.
*Defensive end commit A.J. Epenesa reeled in plenty of tackles, a few for loss, and deflected a couple passes down at the line of scrimmage in action on Friday. The game was delayed in the third quarter and will resume Saturday evening.
*Defensive back commit Camron Harrell recorded a rushing touchdown in his team's opener and was in on a handful of tackles.
*Defensive line Coy Kirkpatrick of Madrid was not able to play week 1 due to an injury but will return to the field for week 2.
*Iowa City West receiver Oliver Martin had a big opener on the gridiron Friday as he tallied 161 yards and 2 touchdowns on 8 receptions. Martin also recorded an interception on defense and even threw a 17 yard touchdown pass.
*Target Russ Yeast of Center Grove HS in Greenwood, Indiana had a big Friday night leading his team to a 43-0 victory. Yeast had 9 carries for 143 yards, 1 reception for 36 yards, and three scores.
