Signed: Iowa LB Nate Wieland

Hawkeye Insider takes an in-depth look at each Iowa signee.

COMMIT DATE: January 30, 2017

EVALUATION: It seems like every time Iowa offers a kid late or flips a kid late, that kid ends up being successful and I see that being the case with Wieland. He showed a lot as a high school quarterback in terms of athleticism and mental acumen and he has the frame to develop at linebacker too. - Midwest Analyst Allen Trieu

RECRUITMENT: Wieland committed to Northern Illinois very early on once it didn't appear that he was not on the brink of any 'power five' offers. He had originally picked Northern Illinois over fellow MAC program Eastern Michigan. Iowa continued to be in contact with him and monitored his progress throughout his entire recruitment. The connection between Iowa and Wieland never dissipated. They did wait to offer him until the final full weekend before Signing Day. That didn't matter. He visited the following weekend and committed to the Hawkeyes a day afterwards.

OUTLOOK: He could probably play a few different positions but he is a bit too big for the secondary probably and has more room to grow out even more so linebacker does seem to be the likely destination. I like him more as a linebacker prospect than Bo Bower at the same stage. He's a bit quicker and has more natural athleticism. Wieland is a football player and that is always a compliment when I say that. That means your football IQ is superb and you're just a tough guy both mentally and physically. Even with some physical limitations, those guys pan out. I think Wieland will as well. How soon does it happen? I think it'll be a few years but don't forget about him.
