Signed: Iowa WR Brandon Smith

Hawkeye Insider takes an in-depth look at each Iowa signee.

COMMIT DATE: June 26, 2016

EVALUATION: He's a bigger target at 6-foot-3 and about 200 pounds. Smith does need to get into the weight room and bulk up his frame a bit and add some strength so that he can beat jams off the line of scrimmage but his natural skill set and overall athleticism is intriguing. His high school coaches will tell you that he is a freak athletically and that should make him someone that is very explosive after the catch with a large catch radius. That has been missing from the Iowa offense for a while and he has the potential to fill that void.

RECRUITMENT: At one time he was holding out offers from the local programs Ole Miss and Mississippi State but they never came. He had a few offers from lesser programs until he was offered by Kelvin Bell and the Hawkeyes and then impressed the Iowa staff in person at a summer camp on a weekend in June. That same weekend he chose not to wait and gave Iowa his verbal commitment. He flirted on the side with Vanderbilt a little bit and nearly visited, but ultimately didn't and stayed true to his word with Iowa.

OUTLOOK: Iowa is very short on proven receivers that have had a lot of production in their careers. They're also short on wideouts in general as they do only have five on scholarship currently. That gives Smith a golden opportunity to be able to contribute Iowa City immediately despite being a bit raw at the position. He may be one that develops on the fly as the path to the field is pretty clear for him.
