Signed: Iowa Punter Ryan Gersonde

Hawkeye Insider takes an in-depth look at each Iowa signee.

COMMIT DATE: January 31, 2017

EVALUATION: Gersonde is rated as the nation's 9th best punter according to Kohl's Kicking (an organization that ranks kickers and punters every year and holds camps and showcases). He is a left-footed punter with a strong leg and has numerous 50-yard punts under his belt in his high school career.

RECRUITMENT: Up until about two weeks ago, Gersonde's only offer was from Wyoming. Iowa had been in the market for a punter after Ron Coluzzi graduated. They had looked closely at four or five punters but chose that Gersonde was the one that they wanted to pursue. They extended a scholarship to the Milwaukee native with a little over a week left before Signing Day and he committed to the Hawkeyes a few days after taking an official visit to the Iowa campus.

OUTLOOK: Gersonde was awarded a full scholarship to Iowa which means the plan is definitely for him to come in and be the starting punter for the Hawkeyes on day one. That should be what everyone should anticipate headed into the Fall. Colten Rastetter and Jackson Terry will attempt to thwart that and win the starting job themselves but Iowa doesn't offer Gersonde if they don't believe he'll be the starter this Fall. Never say never as the same situation happened with kicker Mick Ellis a few years ago and he's yet to claim the starting job.
