Iowa Among Final Eight for Byers

TheInsiders.com's No. 1 overall national prospect, Jeff Byers (Loveland, Colo.), has narrowed his potential college choices to an elite eight institutions. And the Iowa Hawkeyes are still in the mix for this dominating offensive lineman's services. Read what Byers has to say in this update from national recruiting analyst Jamie Newberg.

Jeff Byers has had some tough decisions to make.

TheInsiders.com No. 1 overall prospect has wanted to narrow his school choices down for sometime now. But that's a tough call to make for anyone, especially for Byers considering he could play for virtually any program in the country if he wanted to.

Going into the month of September, Byers had scholarship offers from coast to coast, from Miami to Ohio State, from Texas, to UCLA and almost everyone in between. But enough is enough, or should we now say eight is enough, as Byers has narrowed it down to eight very lucky schools.

"USC, UCLA, Colorado, Texas, Nebraska, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Iowa are the eight schools I have it narrowed down to," Byers said moments ago. "That's not in any order either. I looked at a ton of schools and each school that made this list fell into my criteria that I was looking for: academics, chemistry and the coaching staffs. Each school has great academics, good team chemistry and I really like the coaching staffs. I have just about the same thoughts about all eight schools. Now I need to take the next step. Byers, from Fort Collins (Colo.) Loveland High school, had a busy spring and summer. He and his father took unofficial visits to all eight of his school finalists as well as many others. Those trips paid huge dividends for Byers in getting such a great head start with the recruiting process. And he wants everyone to know that just because a team doesn't get an official visit from him in the future, don't count them out.

"I will most likely take my five official visits and maybe some more unofficial visits during the year. But I hope to make a decision sometime in November, maybe December."

Actually Byers only has four official visits to take because he made his first one last weekend to Columbus, as he visited the Ohio State Buckeyes.

"It was a blast," Byers explained. "Ohio State was a ton of fun. I got to know the players and coaches. The game day atmosphere is incredible. It was everything I expected at Ohio State and more. The place is just crazy, the fans are crazy and I loved it. Coach (Jim) Tressel is a great coach that does the job well and does it with passion. I like that."
