Iowa OL Target Trevor Downing Recaps Visit, Approaching Decision

Iowa is hoping to land Trevor Downing soon.

Iowa got their last crack at in-state offensive lineman Trevor Downing on Monday as he visited the Hawkeyes just a few days after taking a trip to see P.J. Fleck and Minnesota. The Gophers don't appear as prominent in his recruitment as Iowa and the Cyclones.

Iowa State has been considered the favorite for a while now because of his long-lasting relationship with the Cyclone staff and the amount of visits he has taken. Because of that, he's a bit closer and more familiar with those coaches, lives closer, and they also have the agriculture program that the Hawkeyes do not.

But the visit to Iowa City gave him more positive thoughts on Kirk Ferentz's program.

"It was great," Downing said of the visit. "I visited with coach (Tim) Polasek and coach (Chris) Doyle and coach (Kirk) Ferentz all one-on-one. That was real nice. I also was able to meet Marshal Yanda since he was there working out at Iowa. He does that sometimes in the offseason for the NFL."

"It was great talking with Polasek," he added. "He's a great coach."

Speaking with new offensive line coach Tim Polasek was a great time but he also reflected on the joy of meeting an all-NFL pro.

"Yanda was pretty fun to talk to," Downing pointed out. "He said there isn't a better place NFL scouts look for offensive linemen than Iowa."

Downing then shared what would be next on his plate in his recruitment. There was no mention of any additional visits to anywhere at this time but we don't believe it is anything to rule out.

"Next step is just to be making a college decision," he admitted. "I don't have a date set for sure but it's going to be happening pretty soon."
