Iowa Lands Offensive Tackle Cody Ince

Iowa gets a signature recruiting win over P.J. Fleck and Minnesota.

Kirk Ferentz and Iowa are really having a lot of success recruiting offensive linemen in the past few years. Finally, as most Iowa fans would say. Balsam Lake (Wisc.) Unity offensive tackle Cody Ince committed to Iowa late Sunday night over Minnesota.

The Hawkeyes had always developed linemen real well but never were landing the top tackles in the region. They are now. They beat out several Big Ten schools for Alaric Jackson in the 2016 class. Iowa landed Tristan Wirfs and Mark Kallenberger in the 2017 cycle, two linemen most schools in the country would have taken. They follow that up with a big tackle from Wisconsin that also was being pursued heavily by P.J. Fleck and Minnesota.

That's the second angle to consider in all of this. Ince picking the Hawkeyes gives Kirk Ferentz and Iowa a signature recruiting win over Fleck. That is pretty significant because Fleck is known for his recruiting prowess and had been having a ton of success. Iowa could make it two in a row this week when Noah Shannon of Illinois makes his college choice.

The third and final storyline here would be that two of Iowa's new assistants are responsible for half the class so far in the 2018 cycle. Receivers coach Kelton Copeland had a ton to do with the commitments of wideouts Tyrone Tracy and Samson Evans. Polasek, along with Seth Wallace, played a huge role in the commitment of Henry Geil of Wisconsin.

Polasek has struck again with Ince. He was his area recruiter at both North Dakota State, and now Iowa. He's also his future position coach. This was a Tim Polasek win through and through. He and Copeland have played a very large role in four of the eight pledges. Brian Ferentz deserves credit for Jeff Jenkins, Phil Parker for Terry Roberts, Reese Morgan for Tyler Linderbaum, and anyone and everyone for Dillon Doyle.

The Hawkeyes now have eight commitments and they'll likely be in the double digits this time next week so stay tuned.
