Florida DE Sets Visit to Iowa

Replacing the losses in the defensive line is obviously a huge objective for the coaching staff this recruiting season. The staff has looked all around the country for the physical prototype player they want. There hard work has resulted in finding another 'gem' from Florida. As you might expect, this DE prospect can really run. A great strength & conditioning program is high on the list of things he is looking for in a football program. Can Coach Doyle help seal the deal?

Coach Bielema now has a companion recruiting with him in Florida. Coach (Phil) Parker doesn't just build sand castles at the beach when he goes on his many trips to Florida. However, he did find a Cassell that can kick sand in a lot of faces.

DE Steve Cassell (6'4 235 4.6) is actually one of my favorites that I have spoken to so far in my interviews. I had his name passed on to me from a very good source in Florida. After seeing Iowa be the first school to jump on Bob Sanders and Matt Roth the past two years, this kid really makes me appreciate the great staff we have. They have great ability to ferret out players that fit the mold they want. However, I really got excited when I talked to Steve. Here is what he had to say:

"At this point, Iowa is my only offer," stated Steve. "Central Florida and South Florida have given me verbal offers, and I've been receiving calls from Notre Dame, Florida, Georgia, and Southern Mississippi."

"I've set-up a visit to Iowa for November 17th when they take on Minnesota. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm not saying I'm gonna commit, but right now I picture myself going there. I plan to use some of my official visits as I earned the trips, but my decision should be made before Christmas time."

"The strength & conditioning program at Iowa has really gained my interest as I was told how hard they work. My coaches keep telling me that I'd be in corn country so I'll have to be pulling tractors and trailers of corn (laughing). I use to do a lawn-mowing business right here in my hometown of Brooksville,FL with my grandpa so I'm use to working with machiner. I think being up in Iowa would be pretty cool."

Steve has some work to do on the ACT with a test score of only 16, but with him carrying a 3.0 GPA he shouldn't have much problem bettering that score in October. Once again, with Iowa's recent streak of finding sleepers, I wouldn't get too worried over his lack of offers. It should be a great experience for Steve as he hopefully will be seeing a blowout victory over the Minnesota Gophers.

Steve knows that Iowa City is not just another walk on the beach. His work ethic and desire should really be piqued when he meets Iowa's Mr. Clean messiah of muscle.
