After Kirk Ferentz holds his weekly press conferences during the regular season, HN.com's Hawkeye beat reporter Rob Howe calls in some bits and pieces before arriving at his office to work up complete press conference reports.

We call this informal report a ‘quick hitter', and we post the information in the HN Clubhouse, which is a forum exclusive for members of Hawkeyenation.com.

Here is today's report from the final weekly press conference of the Spring football season for 2004.

-Tom Busch is out for the rest of the spring. Gableman had ACL surgery today. Felder has also been out (neck), hope to get him back this week.

-That is it as for the injuries, other than Ferentz and Walker, which we knew about, in addition to nicks and bruises.

-Roth was hilarious, and was the reason that the media stayed later. More quotes from Roth later today from Rob.

-There was a lot of discussion about the quarterbacks, and that Tate and Manson have both elevated their play and that it should be an open battle going into the fall.

-WR area is something Kirk said really needs to ‘move forward', i.e. improve. He normally doesn't single things out.

-Says he likes the OL progress, but it's another area where they need a lot of growth. Gates and Croning are co-starting RG's right now. That may have been Felder's spot originally. Davis, Holloway, Hinkel and Melloy are 1-2, but those are all interchangeable and going into the fall.

-Same thing on the OL…a lot of those positions are still open to competition, so do not read much into the starters right now.

-Schlicher…said that he looks good…they don't expect him to come out and have to be Nate Kaeding right away.

-DL, all RS frosh are all kind of competing for time…like the OL line spots…everyone in the mix.

-Jermelle has been sore, but I think he has been held out sort of like they treated Fred last year…they know what he can do, and no sense to put him into harm's way.

-Schnoor and Young are co-#2's

-Kirk said that Paschal was the solid #1 at SS. Jovon told Rob that Walner is playing well, still trying to learn the defense.

-New two deeps
