A couple of years ago, I started an idea like this on my IowaSportsOpinions.com web site. It covered athletes and programs throughout the state…at every level. And there were some very good debates and discussions that came out of it.
Of course, a key to this being successful is the nomination process. So, don't hesitate to share your opinions.
Together, we will create a Hall of Fame for people who have contributed to the Hawkeye sports scene, based on the nominations of the loyal readers of Hawkeye Nation.com. It will definitely make for some interesting discussions and probably some spirited debates.
We'll call it the Hawkeye Nation.com Hall of Fame and we will include not just athletes, but also teams, coaches, broadcasters, sportswriters and whoever—or whatever—else is deserving. Including games.
Sound like a good idea?
Make your nominations…
Feel free to e-mail your nominations to me in the next few days or so. I'll compile the list of nominees and comments…and I'll include this information in an upcoming column. Once we have all the nominations submitted, I'll put together a panel to vote on who should be "enshrined" into our prestigious Hall of Fame.
Make your nominations in each of the following categories:
Teams: Nominate your favorite Hawkeye teams…and include the accomplishments and records that lead you to believe they're worthy of induction.
Athletes: Nominate your favorite Hawkeye athletes…and include their achievements and awards that you think are relevant.
Coaches: Same drill.
Hawkeye Media: Nominate your favorite sportswriters or broadcasters and the reasons you think they're outstanding.
Games: Nominate your all-time favorite Iowa games and why you think they are the classics.
At-Large Bids: This should be a fun category. Nominate whoever you want…simply list the reasons you think the person is worthy. However, this should be someone who is unlikely to be nominated in another category. For example, you could nominate athletes for outstanding individual performances (Steve Waite's three-point play against Georgetown in 1980, for example), an Athletic Director or any one-hit wonders that you can remember. Whatever. Anything goes.
Simply send an e-mail to me at Marty@iowasportsopinions.com with your nominations in any—or all—of these categories. Feel free to have a little fun with it.
I look forward to your comments…and sharing the ideas with readers in an upcoming column.
