Athlon Sports, publisher of America's Premier Sports Annuals, is releasing its preseason Top 25 at www.athlonsports.com. Iowa checks in at No. 17.
Athlon Sports predicts Iowa to finish 3rd in the Big Ten. Last year, Athlon selected the Hawkeyes to finish in 7th place. An aggregate ranking system compiling all of the pre-season publications from 2003 had Iowa in 6th place to start last year.
Athlon also ranks position groups, and Iowa Iowa's linebackers are rated No. 1 in the Big Ten and No. 2 in the nation. Abdul Hodge was selected all Big Ten last year, and Chad Greenway made the second team. Both players will be juniors in 2003.
Iowa's defensive line, which has allowed fewer than 93 yards rushing per game over the past two seasons, is rated No. 2 in the Big Ten.
Kyle Williams is rated the No. 5 incoming freshman in the Big Ten.
