Hawks Offer Another Illinois LB

Rahkeem Smith of Villa Park, Illinois wondered if he would play football again after suffering an serious injury earlier in his career. After fighting back on the road to recovery, Smith finds himself with an offer from the University of Iowa. If Villa Park sounds familiar, current Hawkeye Matt Roth hails from that school...Chris Pool has the latest on Smith and the Iowa angle.

Iowa assistant coach Lester Erb has made his rounds in the Chicago area and has returned back to Iowa City with glowing reports to Hawkeye head coach Kirk Ferentz.

The Hawks have already offered Illinois blue-chip prospects Dan Doering, Dace Richardson and David Moosman but Erb may have found some diamonds in the ruff and they are receiving Iowa offers now as well.

Yesterday, we were the first to report that Ryan Bain received his Iowa scholarship offer via telephone conversation with Kirk Ferentz and we were also on top of the Justin Anderson (Steinmetz) offer and now we have confirmed the 3rd Chicago are offer by Iowa on a very busy Monday.

Rahkeem Smith, a 6-foot-2, 217-pound linebacker from Villa Park (Ill.) Willowbrook has been offered a scholarship by Iowa but that's not his only offer.

"My first offer was Pittsburgh," said Smith. "Iowa and Pitt are my only offers right now but I've had a lot of schools contact me and tell me they are close and could offer soon.

"My favorites are Iowa, Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, Kansas State, Illinois, Bowling Green and Arizona State.

"I'm definitely going to camp at Iowa this summer but I'm not sure on anything else right now."

If Willowbrook sounds familiar to the Iowa fans, that's because Hawkeye defensive end Matt Roth also prepped at the Villa Park, Illinois high school also.

Receiving scholarship offers is a major accomplishment for Smith because he was told two years ago that he would never play football again because of a lacerated kidney he received his sophomore year.

Smtih did play football again and he had a super junior season totaling 67 tackles, 12 sacks and 11 tackles for loss.

Rahkeem Smith also attended the Chicago MSL Combine and looked super. To say Smith passed the eyeball test would be an understatement. Smith looked great in the drills and he carried himself extremely well in interviews.
